Anthony Jackson’s Evolving Impact at PPRI: From Fieldwork to Ph.D.
When Anthony Jackson first joined the Public Policy Research Institute (PPRI) at Texas A&M University, he was a recent sociology graduate with a passion for community engagement and a curiosity about research. Today, he is a Ph.D. student and Graduate Research Assistant looking toward a future that includes leading teams of his own. Anthony’s journey reflects the transformative power of mentorship, opportunity, and purpose-driven work.
A Local Start with a Broad Vision
Raised in Bryan–College Station, Anthony’s roots in the community shaped his passion for social impact. After earning his undergraduate degree in sociology in December 2014, he began working at PPRI as a Research Assistant. His early work, focused on senior wellness, involved conducting in-person interviews across Texas and training field interviewers to do the same; skills that laid the foundation for his future in research.
Exposure to PPRI’s interdisciplinary environment introduced Anthony to a variety of projects and dynamic teammates like Megan McIntire, PPRI’s current Associate Director. “I remember discussing his path to the Sociology doctoral program. By that time, he was a successful Research Specialist with eight years of experience learning new methods and working with multiple teams and stakeholders.” McIntire stated. The Associate Director also noted, “He is a high performer able to dig in and tackle new things, but getting his PhD was important to everyone.”
Support and Growth Through Academic Transitions
When the institute underwent organizational and operational changes as it sunset its survey lab services and moved to an on-campus location in May 2020 during the COVID-19 Pandemic, Anthony stayed the course and witnessed first-hand the adaptability and resilience of PPRI’s leadership.
Anthony’s academic ascent continued with an online master’s degree program at Sam Houston State University, during which PPRI provided unwavering support. After a brief break, he returned to pursue a Ph.D. beginning Fall 2023, encouraged by colleagues like Dr. Nandita Chaudhuri, who saw his potential and urged him to study full-time. Anthony navigated the transition smoothly, balancing rigorous coursework with meaningful contributions to PPRI.
Now halfway through his doctoral program, Anthony is preparing for preliminary exams and looking forward to returning to PPRI full-time. His wife, Jennifer Jackson, also works at Texas A&M in Sponsored Research Services, making their shared commitment to the university and its mission a family affair.
Looking Ahead: Building Stronger Communities
Anthony’s stated long-term goal is to graduate in 2027 and step into a Principal Investigator role at PPRI. His interests lie in community development, especially supporting small organizations with big visions like senior centers, adult disability services, and grassroots initiatives that need help expanding and securing funding.
His volunteer work as a CASA advocate from 2018 to 2019 reflects his dedication to a safe and secure world for all. His dissertation explores historical policies surrounding minority education, tying together his academic pursuits with his commitment to social justice. As he sets his sights on new horizons, Anthony stands as a compelling example of how strong local roots, academic drive, and institutional investment can converge to create meaningful, lasting change.
A Mutual Investment in Impact
Anthony Jackson’s journey is a testament to the power of shared growth. With PPRI’s support, he has flourished and in return, he continues to elevate the institute through his sharp insight, unwavering dedication, and deep commitment to community. From leading focus groups for the Texas Veterans Commission to crafting strategic survey designs, Anthony embodies the kind of thoughtful, impact-driven leadership that PPRI seeks to nurture.
