Senior Adult Falls Education and Reduction (SAFER) Meals

(2024-2025)

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Falls are a leading cause of severe injury and loss of independence among older adults. Each year, millions of older Americans fall, with one in five falls resulting in a significant injury (CDC, 2023). In Texas, where the aging population is growing faster than both the national average and the overall state population, the incidence of falls is projected to increase drastically in the coming decades (Severance et al., 2022; Texas Demographic Center, 2016). In this context, the SAFER Meals project helps implement a Matter of Balance (MOB), an evidence-based falls prevention program, along with concomitant social marketing strategies, in two resource-poor senior nutrition program sites in San Antonio, Texas that have never implemented this program. These sites act as entry points to long-term support systems (LTSS) for older adults to address malnutrition, food security, safety, and overall health and well-being.
